The FDA has approved a generic version of Pfizer's erectile dysfunction drug, Viagra.
A spokesperson for Pfizer Inc. said, "Pfizer has made significant progress with its drug Viagra and continues to work closely with the U. S. Food and Drug Administration and regulatory agencies worldwide to address the safety and efficacy issues associated with its formulation."
Pfizer said it is working on a generic version of the drug. The company was not authorized to comment on the FDA approval of Viagra.
The approval was based on the results of an independent study that compared the drug with a placebo. The study found that men taking Viagra had a statistically significant increase in the amount of blood flow to the penis compared with men not taking the drug.
The FDA also approved Pfizer's Viagra products, called Propecia and Finasteride, as well as generic versions of the drug, called Proscar and Viagra, as well as the brand name version of the drug.
The FDA approved the generic versions of the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra and Proscar in May 2011.
The company said it will update its website and website, which is part of a broader effort by Pfizer Inc. to better understand how the drugs work, what they're used for, and their side effects.
